AmbiPay

AmbiPay is Ambimat Electronics’ automatic fare collection and contactless acceptance hardware. It is a reader and gate-validator platform for transit operators — buses, trains and metros — together with the integration work that connects it to the host and back-office systems that actually settle the fare.

A note on terminology: AmbiPay is acceptance hardware and the software that integrates it. Ambimat designs and produces the device that reads the card or phone and hands a secured credential onward; the gateway, acquirer and merchant systems that authorise and settle the transaction are the operator’s own or a third party’s. Ambimat is not a payment gateway operator.

Standards the platform works to

The exact card families, data rates and power figures are on the product page. In outline, the contactless side covers ISO/IEC 14443 type A and B, ISO/IEC 15693 and ISO/IEC 18000-mode 3, full NFC Forum tag support and the MIFARE and Sony FeliCa families; the EMVCo side covers the L1 contactless protocol specification and built-in Dynamic Power Control; and the secure-element side supports up to five hardware SAMs.

Engineering and integration

The part of an AFC deployment that varies most is not the card read — that is standards work — but everything around it: which SAMs and secure-element scheme the operator has settled on, what certification path applies, how the validator reports to the host, and what happens when the network is unavailable at the gate. Ambimat’s involvement runs from the device itself through to that host integration, and the hardware is designed and manufactured in-house, so the interface and the secure-element configuration can follow the deployment rather than the other way round.
