Spacecraft Interface Simulator

The Spacecraft Interface Simulator was a bespoke ground-test instrument Ambimat designed and fabricated for ISRO’s Space Applications Centre. It stood in for the spacecraft mainframe so a payload could be exercised on the ground. It is a historical engineering project, not a catalogue product.

The problem it solved

A payload cannot be evaluated on its own. It expects timing and command signals from the spacecraft it will eventually fly on, and during ground testing that spacecraft is not available. The Spacecraft Interface Simulator interfaces to a computer and generates those clocks and command signals itself, so payload operation, ground testing and evaluation can proceed in the mainframe’s absence.

What Ambimat did

Ambimat took the system from concept through fabrication. The simulator was built on a motherboard and daughter-board arrangement, chosen so that additional capability could be added later by adding a board rather than by rebuilding the instrument. The electronics were housed in a rack-mountable 4U chassis, and the fabricated unit passed a 168-hour laboratory burn-in test before it was delivered.

Where it sat in the checkout chain

The simulator is a subsystem of the Electro Optical Payload Ground Checkout and Evaluation Instrumentation. Its counterpart on the receiving side is the Data Handling Unit, which conditions payload data for the acquisition computer. What this project shows today

Simulating an absent host system well enough to qualify hardware against it is a recurring problem in aerospace, defence and industrial test. This project is evidence that Ambimat has solved it once, to a customer specification, with the mechanical, electronic and qualification work carried out in house. The unit itself was built for its programme and is not offered for sale.
