The Data Handling Unit was a bespoke instrument Ambimat designed and fabricated for ISRO’s Space Applications Centre, built to support the ground testing and evaluation of electro-optical sensors for remote sensing. It is a historical engineering project, not a catalogue product.
What the project was
Before a remote-sensing payload flies, it has to be exercised and characterised on the ground. That work is carried out with a set of purpose-built instruments known collectively as the electro-optical payload ground checkout and evaluation instrumentation. The Data Handling Unit is one of those instruments, and Ambimat built it to the mission requirement rather than adapting anything from a catalogue.
The problem it solved
A payload under test produces data in the form the spacecraft would have consumed, not in the form a test computer can record. The DHU sits between the two. It receives payload data and conditions it to suit the computer-based data acquisition system, so the sensor can be driven and its output captured without the flight data path being present.
It also provides a selectable analog channel for quick-look display and verification — the channel that lets an engineer confirm at the bench that the payload is behaving, before the recorded data is analysed properly.
What Ambimat did
Ambimat’s scope covered the electronics design, the mechanical realisation and the qualification of the delivered unit. The electronics were built as a motherboard carrying daughter boards rather than as one fixed assembly, so the instrument could be extended later without a redesign. The completed electronics were housed in a rack-mountable 4U chassis, and the assembled unit was run through a 168-hour burn-in test in the laboratory before delivery.
Burn-in at that duration is part of Ambimat’s standing test and qualification practice, which also covers functional and environmental testing.
Where it sat in the checkout chain
The DHU was one of several subsystems Ambimat built for the same ground checkout chain. The Spacecraft Interface Simulator supplied the clocks and command signals the payload would otherwise have received from the spacecraft mainframe. What this project shows today
Ambimat has served design, development and fabrication needs for ISRO for over three decades. The Data Handling Unit is a concrete example of that work: a one-off instrument specified by the customer, engineered end to end, and qualified before it left the laboratory. Ambimat does not hold this unit as a stock item, and the design belongs to the programme it was built for. What carries forward is the engineering capability — building instrumentation to a specification, in a rack format, qualified to a defined burn-in standard.
