AmbiCon is Ambimat’s Bluetooth Low Energy proximity line — hardware that announces itself to nearby phones so an application can react to where someone is, rather than waiting to be opened.
The product listed here is the AmbiCon Bluetooth Beacon. It transmits user-defined data over BLE 4.0 in the 2.4–2.5 GHz band at a configurable interval, and any BLE-capable receiver running a suitable application can pick it up — in practice iOS 6 and later or Android 4.3 and later. Because detection happens in the background, the receiving app does not need to be open for the beacon to be noticed. Physically it is a 101.6 × 101.6 × 46.99 mm enclosure weighing 166 g, powered from USB or a 24 V supply at around 9 mA, with a screw-down cover, surface-mounting flanges and four PCB bosses in the base. Usable range is 40–60 ft.
Two deployment patterns come up most often. Fix the beacon in the environment and you are tracking people — footfall, dwell, zone entry. Fix it to the asset and use phones as the receivers and you are tracking equipment instead. The same hardware does both; what changes is where you mount it and what the application does with the advertisement.
Choosing a proximity path is mostly a question of range, power and who owns the receiver. BLE beacons are the right answer when the receiver is a phone somebody already carries and the useful distance is tens of feet. They are the wrong answer when you need metre-level accuracy, when there is no app on the receiving side, or when the tag must run for years on a coin cell.
